Igloo
Today at school we built an igloo in lessons. We had to wrap up warm with hats, coats and gloves.
We decided to build bricks of snow using small rectangular washing up bowls as a mould. We had to pack the snow firmly into the mould and then tip it out like a sand castle.
We drew a circle in the snow with a stick to mark where to put the bricks. We placed the bricks on the line and built upwards from there. Once we got to tummy height we started to lean the bricks inwards and to use smaller bricks. We carried on until the roof was done.
Then we had to fill in the gaps in the walls and roof between the bricks and smooth it over.
We decorated our igloo with a TV on the top and a big smiley face of Mr. Heckle.

School Makes Healthy Living Video
The children of Selsted CEP School joined forces with the National Health Service about this time last year to make a video about Healthy Living and specifically Hand Washing and infection control. This video has been played on the Your Kent TV website throughout the year.
If the video above doesn't work for you, you can view it here. (This link will open the video in an external website yourkenttv.co.uk that the school has no editorial control over).
School Carol Concert
Selsted CEP School held our annual Carol Concert. I am glad to hear that everyone was in fine voice again this year and very pleased to see such a brilliant turnout. The sports hall was packed again!
We would like to extend our thanks to the good folk of the Snowdown Colliery Welfare Brass Band who have provided musical accompaniment, Carols and festive cheer again this year.
School Visits the Royal Opera House
We had a fantastic time at the Royal Opera House on Friday, we saw Les Patineurs (A style of ballet to look as though they ice skating, very impressive!). The tales of Beatrix Potter was wonderful - all the characters looked exactly like the illustrations in the book and the scenery was beautiful. As the curtain rose for the start of the programme all the children gasped - a magical moment.
After the ballet we were privileged to be invited to meet Mr. Todd, the fox and Mrs. Tiggywinkle, Jemima Puddle Duck, and one of the five pigs. The dancers removed their character heads and answered questions from the children. We were surprised to see that Mrs Tiggywinkle was in fact a male dancer! The costumes were very large and heavy and obviously very hot.
We were fortunate to have a good journey there and back, many of the children seeing the Tower of London, Pudding Lane, Big Ben and the London Eye as well as Covent Garden (very briefly) for the first time. We drew quite a bit of attention as all our party were wearing high visibility jackets to ensure we could all pick each other out in the crowds as we walked from the coach to the Opera House.
Having left Selsted School at 8:30 AM we arrived back at 6:00 PM a very happy, but tired group of children, parents and staff! As expected, our children behaved beautifully all day long - we were very proud of them all.
